ALC, NTC applaud new national transport and logistics safety code

THE NATIONAL Logistics Safety Code was released at the Australian Logistics Council’s (ALC) 7th Annual Forum.

The new code shows the transport and logistics industry can lead the way to safer freight movement.

According to ALC chief executive Hal Morris, the industry-based code will enable businesses in the supply chain to access a best practice, auditable framework setting out their responsibilities under road transport laws and OH&S legislation.

In the past, complex regulation, often differing across state borders, was a major hindrance for the transport and logistics industry.

Morris said the ALC is proud to have worked with industry to produce this single code.

The NLSC is essentially a single, comprehensive code for the transport and logistics industry, designed to be used as a condition of business and independent third-party audited as well as flexible and adaptable for the needs of each individual business.

It is a voluntary code of minimum operational standards that meet the highest level of regulation impacting transport and logistics throughout Australia.

Morris said that the NLSC applies to all players in the supply chain as safety is everyone’s responsibility.

National Transport Commission (NTC) chief executive Nick Dimopoulos also welcomed the launch of the NLSC and said it was a valuable tool for the industry to reduce risks and improve compliance.

Dimopolous added that it sends a clear message to customers that participating companies are serious about safety.

The NLSC has been developed by the ALC through the harmonisation of the Retail Logistics Supply Chain Code of Conduct with the Steel Code of Practice. Further industry codes are currently being assessed for inclusion in the NLSC.

The NLSC does not replace other industry codes, instead it is designed to work with them to strengthen safety compliance in the transport and logistics industry.
