ATA Chief calls for safer truck operators at National Workplace Safety Summit

AUSTRALIA’S trucking companies need to put in place strong safety policies in order to slash the number of accidents, according to Australian Trucking Association (ATA) Chief Executive Stuart St Clair.

In his presentation at the National Workplace Safety Summit on Friday, Stuart said there was a big difference between the safest companies in the industry and the rest.

He said Australia’s best and safest trucking companies have policies to train, support and monitor their drivers and ensure they are fit and healthy to drive.

He added these safe operators invest in the safest vehicles, maintain them well, and have systems to ensure their drivers are scheduled legally.

Stuart added that a company does not have to be a big operator to have safety systems like these as the ATA’s TruckSafe accreditation program enables every company to put them in place.

He added a growing number of customers are insisting on dealing with accredited operators under the provisions of industry codes or as a simple way of meeting part of their chain of responsibility obligations.
