THE AUSTRALIAN Trucking Association (ATA) has expressed disappointment following the decision by the Coalition, Greens and independent senators to vote down the Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme this week.
The Government must now wait three months before reintroducing the same legislation.
ATA Chairman, Trevor Martyn, said the rejection of the legislation was a missed opportunity by the Parliament.
Martyn said the ATA is disappointed by the Senate’s vote against the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme as emissions trading is the best way to achieve Australia’s greenhouse targets at the lowest cost to industry and consumers.
Martyn added if emissions trading is not introduced, the trucking industry is likely to be lumbered with confusing, ad-hoc and complicated environmental regulations by the state and even local governments.
He said the result would be a paperwork and compliance nightmare for trucking operators; it would make it harder and more expensive to meet Australia’s targets.
The ATA urged the Coalition, Greens and independent senators to think again and pass the scheme.
