THE Biofuels Association of Australia (BAA) has announced biofuels are the way of the future for Australia’s heavy transport industry.
The Association says it was delighted with the level of support given to the industry by Australia’s Federal Opposition.
“Australia has the opportunity to be at the forefront of biofuel production and use with the perfect climate for the generation of feedstocks that do not conflict with land used for food,” BAA CEO Heather Brodie says.
“The study proposed by the Opposition will be absolutely crucial in advancing the needs of the industry and we welcome this strong commitment to biofuels.”
According to the BAA, 90% of the transportation industry still relies heavy on fossil fuels, and transportation is responsible for more than a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
“Biofuels are capable of significantly reducing the carbon emissions of Australian transport, as well as providing additional flexibility and supply to the Australian fuel market as worldwide peak oil supply is upon us” Brodie says.
The BAA says a majority of heavy transport can already handle blended fuel with either ethanol and biodiesel and believes many more by 2020 will be able to handle take a minimum of B50 blends or more.
“We need to recognise that locally produced, environmentally sustainable and economically viable transport fuels will actually be necessary in order to meet our petroleum demands in the future – and as an integral part of any plan to lower our emissions,” she says.
