ETS delay bad news for truck industry, says ATA

BUSINESSES may be hit with strict emissions standards unless the Coalition and the Greens reconsider their decisions to block the government’s carbon scheme plan, The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) claims.

The ATA said the longer we leave the introduction of an emissions trading scheme (ETS) the more likely it is that there will need to be tough and distortionary regulations.

Under the Government’s proposal, fuel companies will be responsible for buying carbon permits and then passing on the costs through the price of fuel.

The ATA argues this is the best method for the trucking industry because businesses will not need to worry about the administrative burden of complying with emissions trading.

The ATA is urging the Coalition and the Greens to reconsider their position and allow the ETS to go through as soon as possible.
