Fuel excise to fund local councils

THE Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) has called for councils to be given access to the fuel excise if mass-distance charging is not introduced.

ALGA announced its plan at the 2009 Roads and Transport Congress and believes the proposal will be an alternate funding method for councils to maintain their road networks.

According to ALGA, the current fuel excise plan will be altered so councils will receive a fix portion. “Local government receives no direct funding for the use of local roads by heavy vehicles,” ALGA president, Geoff Lake says.

ALGA claims the increased funding will help ease constraints on local councils trying to meet the needs of the trucking industry such as improving road access for heavy vehicles.
