THE FEDERAL Government has announced will spend $28 billion on road projects over the six years from 2008-09 to 2013-14, with $3.4 billion to be invested in 2009-10.
The Budget included the announcement of four priority road projects recommended by Infrastructure Australia.
These projects include the Hunter Expressway in New South Wales, for which construction will start in 2010, with 2013 as a completion date.
$618 million from the Building Australia Fund will be used for the Pacific Highway, Kempsey Bypass in New South Wales, with construction expected to start in 2010 and completion by 2014.
$884 million from the Building Australia Fund will be used for additional work on the Ipswich Motorway in Queensland.
$488 million from the existing Nation Building Program will be used for the Bruce Highway - Cooroy to Curra, in addition to the $200 million the Government has already committed toward the Cooroy to Curra section of the highway.
In addition to the major new projects, work will start in 2009-10 on road projects including the Douglas Arterial duplication in Townsville, Queensland ($55 million), Traralgon to Sale duplication in Victoria ($140 million), the Mandurah Entrance Road in Perth, West Australia ($65 million), and Banora Point upgrade on the Pacific Highway in New South Wales ($210 million).
