Green groups call for emissions scheme for Australian transport industry

GREEN GROUPS are calling for new US emission levels to be implemented in the transport industry Australia.

A US national policy announced last week will see emissions on new cars slashed, with all light vehicles required to achieve 15 kilometres per litre (6.6 litres per 100 kilometres).

The deal to curb greenhouse gas emissions was struck between the Government, car manufacturers and trade unions and will see the US cut its emissions from cars by 30 per cent by 2016.

The Australian Government is currently considering a similar plan for Australia.

The Australian Transport Council (ATC) have resolved to take the recommendations of its Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Working Group to the COAG meeting in July.

The final report recommends measures to improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle fleet, including vehicle standards, such as CO2 emission standards for new light vehicles, and fiscal measures, such as differing duties and charges.

The final report has not yet been released but the draft report included two measures relating to heavy vehicles includinga heavy vehicle environmental rating scheme and a technology demonstration scheme.

Once COAG agrees on what measures will be taken, they will be incorporated in the new National Strategy for Energy Efficiency.
