Iveco hybrid van to slash fuel costs in transport industry

A TRIAL designed to cut fuel costs by using Iveco's hybrid Daily vans has already delivered promising results, with initial figures suggesting a significant drop in consumption levels.

The first six months of FedEx Italy’s trial of the vans reveal an over 25% decrease in fuel costs.

Although the trial will run through to May 2010, the initial results have been welcomed by Iveco as justification for its decision to invest in hybrid technology.

The 10 vans involved in the trial covered an average of 7,900 kilometres and recorded recording a 26.5 percent cut in fuel consumption.

The results also show the vehicles reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 7500kg when compared to a traditional fleet of vans.

As well as the hybrid powertrain, the Dailys also use technology such as Stop & Start, which allows the vehicle to start in electric mode and brake with energy recovery.

The company has also reported positive feedback from drivers, particularly in relation to the performance, functionality, and ease-of-use of the vehicles.

The company said the new investment confirms the ongoing commitment of FedEx Express to making hybrid truck technology a reality.

FedEx Express was the first company to invest in commercially deployable hybrids and is now operating a large number of hybrid vehicles around the globe, Iveco said.
