Major companies in freight industry team up to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

THE ENVIRONMENTAL Protection Agency Victoria (EPAV) and the Victorian Transport Association (VTA), along with 17 major companies have partnered to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The 'EcoStation' program, which includes companies such as Linfox, Woolworths and Glen Cameron Transport, is reported to be the first of its kind in Australia.

VTA CEO Phil Lovel said the program demonstrates the importance the freight sector holds in the reduction of carbon emissions.

Lovel said the freight sector contributes between 3 to 6 percent of total Australian emissions and the freight task is predicted to double between 2000 and 2020.

He said the program will build capacity within the freight sector to improve its environmental performance and recognise excellence and innovation in achieving sustainable outcomes.

EPAV Acting Chief Executive Officer Terry A’Hearn said if the program proved successful it would be implemented state and even nationwide.
