National heavy vehicle regulator to be based in Queensland

QUEENSLAND will be home to the nation's heavy vehicle regulator in a move to improve safety and productivity in the trucking industry, the Queensland government announced.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan says the federal government’s decision gives a big tick of confidence in the state's ability to lead the way on heavy vehicle reform.

"Queensland will be home for the new CEO and regulator's office that will boost productivity and improve safety in this critical industry,” Nolan says.

"This decision, as part of the Rudd Government's effort to create a seamless national economy, will tackle the challenge of inconsistent heavy vehicle regulation between state and territory jurisdictions,”

According to the state government, almost 75% of Australia’s freight is carried by trucks and the number of freight vehicles in Queensland has grown by 23% in the last four years. It is expected the number will triple by 2050.

It is proposed that all heavy vehicle regulation reforms will be fully implemented by 2013.
