Trucking industry reduces emissions to keep up with rail

THE TRUCKING industry has announced it can reduce emissions by 25 per cent, in order to compete with low-emissions rail.

While the Australian Rail Track Corporation has said that it is ten per cent cheaper to carry a tonne of freight by rail than road, with rail emitting five times less carbon, The Australian Trucking Association (ATA)’s Stuart St Clair said new engines and alternative fuels will help cut down the emissions.

St Clair added that while rail could indeed prove to be cheaper, trucks will always be required.

He defended that trucking is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to move freight, particularly on the short haul, and companies will prefer to move freight in the best possible mode.
