Victoria to launch new road safety rules for mobile phones, VDU rules

THE VICTORIAN Government has announced it will introduce new road safety rules for mobile phones and visual display units from 9 November 2009.

Under the new rules, using a mobile phone to make or receive a phone call while driving or stationary but not parked will be prohibited unless the phone is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle or the driver can use the phone without holding it, pressing its buttons or touching any part of the body of the phone, such as by using bluetooth or a wired earpiece.

Under the new rules, drivers will only be able to use mobile phones to make or receive phone calls.

All other functions, such as texting, emailing, playing music, or using a built-in GPS navigation system will be banned.

The new rules implement the revisions to Australian Road Rules 299 and 300 that were approved by transport ministers in February 2009.
