ATA welcomes proposed Australian Road Rules changes

THE Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has welcomed the National Transport Commission’s (NTC) proposed changes the Australian Road Rules.

The NTC has released draft changes to the minimum allowed distances between long vehicles on road train routes.

According to the ATA, the new rule requires the driver of a long vehicle to drive at least 200 metres behind another long vehicle on a road train route and 60 metres behind in any other area.

ATA says the amendments will remove unnecessary confusions experienced by other vehicles travelling on road train areas but has also provided improved recommendations.

“We believe many drivers of long vehicles, based upon cars and light trucks, are unaware of their duty under this rule. We ask that the NTC assist in increasing awareness of the rules to drivers of light vehicles with trailers,” the ATA says.
